Building Energy Exchange

About the Event

Join the Building Energy Exchange for a screening of This Changes Everything, a documentary by Naomi Klein exploring the vast challenges of climate change, followed by a short talk by Justin Gundlach of Columbia University’s Sabin Center for Climate Change Law.

This Changes Everything is inspired by Naomi Klein’s book of the same title, which presents seven powerful portraits of communities on the front lines of climate change, from Montana’s Powder River Basin and the Alberta Tar Sands to the coast of South India and Beijing. It was filmed over 211 days, capturing nine countries and five continents over four years. The film re-imagines the vast challenges of climate change from the perspective of specific, individual communities.

Interwoven with these stories of struggle is Klein’s narration, connecting the carbon in the air with the economic system that put it there. Throughout the film, Klein builds to her most controversial and exciting idea: that we can seize the existential crisis of climate change to transform our failed economic system into something radically better.

Provocative, compelling, and accessible to even the most climate-fatigued viewers, the filmmakers hope that This Changes Everything will leave the audience refreshed and inspired, demonstrating how the ties between us, and the kind of lives we really want to pursue, are intimately connected to the climate crisis.

Following the screening, there will be a brief talk by Justin Gundlach of Columbia University’s Sabin Center for Climate Change Law. He will connect themes of the movie with the Center’s work in developing legal techniques to fight climate change and providing up-to-date resources on key topics in climate law and regulation, including the recent climate accord in Paris.
