The Building Retrofit Industry and Market (BRIM) Market Research Scan provides a detailed segmentation of the building retrofit market and summarizes existing market research on each segment. BRIM was designed in three phases:

1. Create a framework for market development
2. Draw up a detailed market segmentation and summarize existing market research on each segment
3. Develop detailed segment-specific strategies and organize key stakeholders to collaborate on national investment strategies

This nationwide market scan found that the residential sector has the largest potential impact due to financing availability and ease of retrofitting. Out of all residential segments, the multifamily segment has the greatest potential for energy savings per dollar, due to its centralized building system and structural characteristics (e.g. lower surface area to volume ratio).
