Join Christoph Reinhart of Massachusetts Institute of Technology for a hands-on 2 day workshop on the use of daylight simulations in an architectural context.
The course will stress the integration of daylight with other sustainabledesign concerns such as solar gain control, electric lighting energy use, and
occupant comfort and will demonstrate how these concerns can collectively act
as form-givers for architecture. Course participants will acquire a range of
daylighting design analysis techniques ranging from rules of thumb to advanced
computer simulations and high dynamic range photography for glare analysis.

The focus audience are designers and
sustainability consultants interested in learning the basic theory underlying
daylight simulations as well as how to integrate such simulations within their
The course format are
formal instructions, in-class discussions, software tutorials and exercises.
Participants will also be given the opportunity to calibrate their personal
digital cameras to take HDR images and learn several ways of how to
quantitatively evaluate these images. Participants are expected to bring a
newer Windows laptop with Rhinoceros 3D and DIVA
4.0 already installed on
it. DIVA is based on the state-of-the-art simulation programs Radiance, Daysim,
Evalglare, and EnergyPlus. The physical assumptions underlying these programs
will be discussed in detail. Bringing a digital camera is optional.
A copy of
the new Daylighting Handbook – Vol. I , written by the instructor, will
also be provided.

Basic familiarity with Rhinoceros 3D software is preferred but not required.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Christoph Reinhart is a building scientist and architectural educator working in the field of sustainable building design and environmental modeling. At MIT, he is leading the Sustainable Design Lab, an inter-disciplinary group with a grounding in architecture that develops design workflows, planning tools, and metrics to evaluate the environmental performance of buildings and neighborhoods. Christoph’s work has been recognized with various awards among them the ARUP Best Paper Prize at Building Simulation 2009 and the 2010 Leon Gaster Price from the Society of Light and Lighting.
