The SURE House: 2015 Solar Decathlon Winner

Join Building Energy Exchange for a presentation of the SURE House, 2015 winner of the US DOE’s Solar Decathlon from the students and faculty at The Stevens Institute of Technology (SIT).

Designed to reduce energy use and adapt to the realities of a changing, more extreme climate, the SURE house is a residential prototype of a sustainable and resilient home for the New Jersey Shore. The SURE house, both designed and built by SIT students, brings together the newest technology and building practices. Following Passive House principles, the SURE house uses 90% less energy than its conventional cousins. It fully powers itself through solar energy, and it is built from repurposed fiber-composite materials pioneered through the boat building industry. These strategies produce a home that drastically reduces its contribution to global climate change, while providing an excellent living environment and bracing for the effects of sea level rise, and increasingly severe storms.

The team received first place overall in the October 2015 competition, winning first place for an unprecedented 7 individual awards including Architecture, Market Appeal, Engineering, Communications, Commuting, Appliances, and Home-Life.

Faculty and student team leaders will present the project in depth – looking at the design process and issues surrounding flood-proof, low energy homes as well as the construction sequence. The team will also offer a behind-the-scenes look at performance data collected during the 10-day competition in Irvine, CA, including the home’s energy generation, energy consumption, and interior comfort data.
