Behind the Meter: Energy Storage at Different Scales

Join the Building Energy Exchange for a discussion on the current state and future prospects of energy storage technologies at different scales.

As energy policies, technologies, and markets shift to encourage more energy efficient buildings and a decentralized energy system, energy storage within individual buildings will play a fundamental role in helping meet the City and State’s goals and in driving down the use of fossil fuel energy sources. In the New York region there are a variety of initiatives and programs of different scales that incentivize energy storage technologies. This includes, but is not limited to, Governor Cuomo’s Reforming the Vision, NYSERDA’s Clean Power Technology Innovation program, and NY-BEST.

Speakers will present the technical components of storage systems of different scales, showcasing leading projects, and discussing their relationship to demand response and grid stress.

Jesse Remillard of Energy & Resource Solutions will introduce facility- and campus- scales energy storage systems. He will explain how these systems respond to utility demand programs and time-of-use rates to cut peak demand costs. Doug Staker of Demand Energy Networks will discuss the “behind the meter” market in NYC and the implementation drivers for the regulator and utilities.

A moderated discussion led by H.G. Chissell of GridMarket will follow the presentations.
