Chasing Ice

Join Green Light New York for a Q&A session with James Balog and the screening of Chasing Ice, the multiple award-winning documentary that captures one of the most important stories in human history – the rapid depletion of the world’s glaciers.

Everywhere on Earth, ice is changing. At an alarming rate of nine percent per decade, glacial ice melt forecasts detrimental consequences for the planet, including sea-level rise, ocean temperature change, and ultimately the alteration of our delicate interlinked ecosystems. Scientists at the U.S. Center for Atmospheric Research predict that if the current rate of global warming continues, the Arctic could be ice-free in the summer of 2040.

Inspired by his first expedition to Iceland, James Balog, an acclaimed environmental photographer, ventures to the Arctic to collect data on the seasonal changes of glaciers. Balog and his young team of adventurists travel to Greenland, Iceland, and Alaska to deploy time-lapse cameras that capture a multi-year record of the world’s changing glaciers resulting in a series of breathtaking photographs weaved together as videos that compress years of glacial erosion into seconds.

This documentary is the recipient of the Sundance Film Festival – Excellence in Cinematography Award, a nominee for an Academy Award and an Emmy, and recipient of over thirty awards around the world. Jeff Orlowski, the director, producer, and cinematographer of Chasing Ice is the founder of exposurelabs, a production company geared toward socially relevant filmmaking.

Immediately following the screening is a Question & Answer session with James Balog. He is the lead in Chasing Ice, an internationally renown photographer, and the founder of the Extreme Ice Survey, the most wide-ranging, ground-based, photographic study of glaciers ever conducted. Balog is a leader in photographing, understanding, and interpreting the natural environment and has been recognized internationally for his work. Read more about his work and accomplishments here.

Green Light’s Chasing Ice screening is a Climate Week NYC affiliated event. From September 22-28, Climate Week NYC is hosting related events in support of and leading to the UN Climate Summit.
