Daylight Simulation Workshop
Join Christoph Reinhart of MIT for a full-day technicalworkshop on daylighting simulation using Rhinoceros 3D 5.0. Mr. Reinhart is a building scientist and architectural educator working in the field of sustainable building design and environmental modeling. His research expertise is in daylighting, passive climatization techniques, urban modeling, and the influence of occupant behavior of building energy use.
WORKSHOP INFORMATION:
The fields of building performance simulation and design computation are converging. A daylighting analysis that used to take a specialist consultant days to prepare can now be generated from schematic design-phase models by the architect within minutes. The resulting ease of use
may be deceptive for new user who do not fully understand what they are actually calculating and what the strengths and limitations of existing simulations programs are. This one day training course is specifically geared towards helping designers and sustainability consultants to learn the basic theory underlying daylight simulations and how to integrate such simulations within their practice. This is a hands-on class in which participants will learn how to conduct a series of simulation exercises on their Windows laptops using the DIVA for Rhino plugin for Radiance and Daysim.
These exercises include:
- Conducting a LEED 3.0 compliance analysis;
- Detecting glare at key positions within a building throughout the year; and
- Developing suitable automated electric lighting and shading controls to
maximize daylight availability while controlling glare. - His course complements a lecture given by the instructor the night before the
course on the new Daylighting
Handbook I, which introduces basic daylighting concepts and rules of
thumb for urban massing studies. - This workshop is geared towards designers and sustainability consultants.
HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS:
Participants are expected to bring a newer laptop with
Windows installed on it. Participants further have to install the
following software packages before the beginning of the workshop.
Rhinoceros 3D 5.0 Participants can install a 90 day
demo version of Rhino 5 from here. DIVA-for-Rhino is a daylighting and energy modeling
plug-in for Rhino. Participants can install a free 30 day trial version
from here.
Please install DIVA 3.0.0.1 Alpha.
Green Light and the instructor reserve the right to cancel the workshop until a
week before the event. In the case of cancelation, enrolled participants will
be fully reimbursed.
