Integrated Daylight at the Bullitt Center: Full Length Video

Integrated Daylight at the Bullitt Center

The Building Energy Exchange is excited to welcome Christopher Meek from the Integrated Design Lab in Seattle to present about the integration and optimization of comfortable daylight in buildings. Among other case studies, Chris will describe the design of daylighting at the Bullitt Center, described by many as the greenest commercial building in the world.

Designing with daylight requires the interplay of form, space, and materiality derived from the influence of site, climate, regional culture, and the distinct requirements of specific visual tasks. Daylight can make our buildings healthier and more energy efficient, and boosts the health and mentality of its occupants. however, designing effective, comfortable daylit buildings remains a challenge.

Led by Christopher Meek, a highly respected and leading expert in daylighting design, this seminar will discuss the key design concepts and strategies that designers can immediately employ successfully in their practices. These concepts will be illustrated through myriad case studies that effectively deliver high-quality luminous environments while meeting energy efficiency goals. Participants will understand why daylight is important in buildings, how to maximize daylight for a space’s unique needs, and how to utilize design strategies and simulation techniques.

Covered topics include:

  • Dynamic nature of daylight;
  • Daylighting design concepts and strategies;
  • Current and emerging metrics for daylight performance in buildings being developed by USGBC and IESNYC;
  • Implementation strategies including climate assessment and post-occupancy analysis; and
  • Successful daylighting case studies that illustrate the challenges and opportunities in design.

Christopher Meek is a recognized expert of daylighting and architecture integration. He consults with design teams in the Pacific Northwest and nationally with a focus on building energy performance, daylighting, visual comfort, electric lighting, and climate responsive design. He is also the author of several books on daylighting design, including his most recent, Daylighting and Integrated Lighting Design.

Christopher Meek, Associate Professor at the University of Washington and Director of the Integrated Design Lab.
