Plug & Play: Managing Plug Loads - Full Length Video

Plug & Play: Managing Plug Loads

Join the Building Energy Exchange for a discussion on innovative strategies for managing plug loads in commercial and residential buildings.

Traditionally, building energy efficiency programs have focused on regulated loads – the energy associated with heating, cooling, and lighting – while largely ignoring the energy consumed by appliances and equipment, so called “plug loads”. Largely invisible to policy makers, plug loads have been allowed to increase without check, and as base building systems become more efficient, unregulated loads are an ever increasing percentage of building energy use. The Plug & Play event will discuss the current and future state of plug load management- the next frontier in building energy efficiency.

The most successful plug load management strategies combine advances in behavioral science, technology, and public policy to fundamentally shift how we think about energy management. There are high tech solutions that involve smart, connected devices, low-tech solutions that challenge occupant behavior, and everything in between.

Our speakers will describe the unique technological and social challenges of plug load management, and present case studies of successful plug load management programs.

Zach Sussman will discuss the importance of occupant engagement through Con Edison’s Connected Devices Pilot program and how its impact fits within the larger context of utility systems and building energy regulations. Chad Sleiman of CISCO will present how an ‘internet of things’ approach can facilitate energy management to increase efficiency and data
collection.

A moderated discussion will follow the presentations.
