Retrofitting Affordability Launch
Building Energy Exchange, Bright Power Inc., and Sustainable Energy Partnerships are
proud to announce the launch of Retrofitting Affordability – a report that uses newly available energy data in the New York City multifamily building sector to classify which buildings and energy
efficiency retrofit measures have the greatest potential for carbon reduction, and how these benefits relate to affordability and the City’s climate action plan. This report finds that if all recommended energy conservation measures from the Local Law 87 audits were implemented across all large multifamily properties in the city, this has the potential to save 18.3 TBTU or 10% of the source energy from NYC’s large multifamily sector and reduce GHG emissions by 11%, while generating an annual savings of over $350 million. These opportunities are spread throughout New York City, ensuring that all inhabitants can benefit from these improvements.
Join us the morning of June 18th to discuss the report’s key findings, including an examination of the first year of Local Law 87 Energy Audit data, the energy savings opportunities of the most frequently recommended energy conservation measures, and how these savings link to affordable housing. The report also outlines challenges and a path forward to help meet the City’s ambitious carbon reduction goals. A moderated discussion with the authors and key players in the city’s climate action plan will follow the presentation.

ABOUT THE REPORT
Retrofitting Affordability is a report by the Building
Energy Exchange, Bright Power, Inc., and Sustainable Energy Partnerships.
Analyzing New York City’s recent Benchmarking Law (Local Law 84) and Energy
Audits & Retro-commissioning Law (Local Law 87) data, as well as related
reports, this study identifies similar building segments that share energy
conservation measures, and thus have similar energy savings and carbon
reduction opportunities. The report also explores the relationship between
these energy savings opportunities and affordable housing. Retrofitting Affordability supports the Mayor’s Retrofit Accelerator initiative, in addition to the comprehensive nationwide “Energy
Efficiency for All” project overseen by the Natural Resources Defense Council,
National Housing Trust, the Energy Foundation, and Elevate Energy. This report
was made possible by the generous support of National Grid and the Natural
Resources Defense Council.
