Ultraviolet Spotlight

Architects, engineers, designers and lighting specifiers have a new tool to provide clean air without the high energy costs of increasing air handling. Recent research and development has produced ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) technology that dramatically reduces airborne disease transmission through irradiation of airborne bacteria.

Join Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, NYSERDA, and Green Light New York for an introduction presentation to the new planning software available to architects and designers to incorporate UVGI into their lighting designs. This event will highlight the scientific foundation of this strategy, a presentation of the promising new technologies available and a demonstration of the planning software developed with funding from NYSERDA.

The UVGI technology is available in lighting fixtures from several manufacturers and is particularly well-suited to buildings with a high incidence of disease transmission, such as hospitals and health care facilities, as well as those with high-intensity occupancy like train stations and border crossings. The airborne disease transmission that the technology mitigates against include tuberculosis, influenza, measles and bioterror agents. Our speakers outlined a number of case studies and described their potential impact on the indoor air quality of each facility. Manufacturers will be on hand to display their fixtures and discuss applications.
