Daylight Hour Event: Redesigning Daylight

The Daylight Hour Campaign by the Building Energy Exchange with support from Fitwel® is pleased to host Redesigning Daylight, an online event discussing the benefits daylit spaces bring to our work, home, and natural environments, and how building owners can utilize daylighting to achieve benefits of sustainability, well-being, and cost-savings.

At the end of 2021, about 1/5 of the office space in Manhattan was vacant. While in 2022 , industry leaders predict a resurgence in office use. The reuse of office space is an opportunity to redesign our workspaces in a sustainable, cost-saving, and healthy manner.

Accessible daylighting in the office space improves occupant well-being, reduces sickness, and increases productivity. Moreover, turning off electrical lighting when daylighting is available reduces energy usage and carbon emissions. For example, in the 2017 Daylight Hour campaign, 811 offices turned their lights off for one hour, saving enough energy to power 9,400 houses and offsetting GHG emissions equivalent to 310,000 miles driven in a passenger vehicle.

Panelists will discuss projects that have successfully utilized daylighting in their workplace, the benefits of these daylit projects to their community, and how daylighting can be integrated in the contemporary workplace.

Join us at this event developed with support from Fitwel® exploring how daylighting and better lighting choices can mean measurable improvements to our work, home, and natural environments.

Moderator:

Sara Karerat, Director of Applied Research, Center for Active Design

Panelists:

Charlene Mendez, LEED AP BD+C, Senior Sustainability Analyst, HDR
Brian Stacy, Project Director, Global Lighting Skills Leader, ARUP

This event runs in conjunction with Daylight Hour, an annual social media campaign observing daylight in our office spaces. On June 22nd, participants all over the world will turn off their lights for one hour during the sunniest time of year, reflect on sustainability and well-being in their work environment, and share their experiences via social media.
